The questions gym owners, property developers and estates actually ask us - answered plainly, without the sales pitch.
Axovent Commercial Fitness Systems is a turnkey commercial gym builder based in Centurion, Gauteng, operating across Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban. Unlike equipment retailers that only sell machines, Axovent designs, supplies and installs every element of a gym under one contract - equipment, flooring, lighting, audio, HVAC, mirrors, recovery, signage and software - and then services it.
An equipment supplier sells you machines and delivers them; coordinating flooring, electrical, lighting, HVAC, mirrors and signage remains your problem, usually across five or six separate contractors. A fit-out company like Axovent takes responsibility for the whole space: one quote, one timeline, one point of contact, and one party accountable if a deadline slips.
A turnkey fit-out covers the full space from an empty floor to opening day: gym equipment, rubber flooring and sled-track turf, LED lighting, audio, HVAC and climate control, mirrors and glass, changing rooms and lockers, reception and juice bar, functional training zones, neon and signage, branding, recovery areas such as ice baths and saunas, and gym-management software.
Equipment typically runs 60 to 90 days from order because it is manufactured to specification, including custom colours and branding. A full multi-trade fit-out takes longer depending on the size of the space and how ready the site is. Axovent provides a staged timeline up front so the client knows what happens in which week.
There is no single figure - cost is driven by floor area, the mix of strength versus cardio, flooring type, whether recovery facilities such as ice baths or saunas are included, and how much electrical and HVAC work the building needs. Sourcing equipment factory-direct rather than through a local showroom removes the retail markup, which is where most of the saving comes from. Axovent quotes every element itemised so clients can see exactly what drives the number.
Full commercial fit-outs generally make sense from around 150 to 200 square metres upward. Smaller spaces, single training zones, equipment-only orders and servicing are all still viable - the layout matters more than raw floor area, which is why a to-scale layout and 3D render is produced before anything is ordered.
Yes. Custom RAL frame colours, branded upholstery and laser-cut or embroidered logos are applied at the factory before the equipment ships, not retro-fitted afterwards. This is standard on Axovent orders rather than a paid extra, and it is one of the practical advantages of ordering factory-direct instead of buying stock from a showroom floor.
Yes. Axovent sources from a global manufacturing network rather than holding local showroom stock, which removes the retailer's markup and allows custom colours and branding. The trade-off is lead time: factory-direct orders run roughly 60 to 90 days rather than being available immediately off a showroom floor.
Sled track (also called sprint turf) is a strip of high-durability artificial turf installed into the gym floor for sled pushes, prowler work and sprint drills. It is specified by length, width and pile type, and is usually set flush into rubber flooring. Axovent supplies and installs both the rubber flooring and the turf as part of the flooring package.
Most commercial gyms use a combination: heavy-duty rubber in free-weight and platform areas to absorb impact and protect the slab, lighter rubber or vinyl in cardio and studio zones, and artificial turf for sled and functional areas. The correct specification depends on the weights being dropped and the building's floor loading.
Yes. Air handling is one of the most commonly underestimated parts of a gym build - poor ventilation causes humidity, odour and equipment corrosion, and it is one of the most frequent member complaints. Climate control should be specified alongside the layout rather than added afterwards, which is why Axovent includes HVAC in the single contract.
Recovery areas have become a genuine revenue line rather than a nice-to-have, often sold as a premium membership tier or a paid add-on. Ice baths, cold plunges and saunas also increase dwell time and retention. Axovent supplies and installs commercial ice baths, chillers and saunas as part of a fit-out or as a standalone recovery zone.
Axovent services any brand of commercial gym equipment on a scheduled Care Plan, not only equipment it supplied. The plan covers preventative servicing, repairs and written condition reports for a flat monthly fee, and starts with a free on-site assessment.
Commercial equipment in a busy facility needs preventative attention on a scheduled cycle rather than being fixed only when it breaks. Cardio equipment, with belts, bearings and consoles, needs attention more frequently than strength frames. Scheduled servicing is far cheaper than emergency repairs and avoids machines standing out of order in front of members.
Beyond the lease and business registration, the physical build needs: a to-scale equipment layout, floor loading confirmed for the free-weight area, adequate power and distribution boards, ventilation and climate control, compliant flooring, mirrors, lighting, sound, changing facilities, signage and a membership and access system. Sequencing these correctly is what determines whether the opening date holds.
Yes. Developers, lifestyle estates, hotels and corporate offices are a core part of the work, where a gym or wellness space forms part of a larger build. In those projects Axovent works to the programme of the main contract and hands over a complete, working facility.
